Yellow Weather Warning - Rain

Here’s a summary of the Met Office weather warnings in place across the UK heading into the weekend (Saturday–Sunday), along with expected impacts and advice. If you tell me which region you’re in, I can give a more local forecast too.

What’s under warning

  • A yellow warning for rain is in force from Saturday 09:00 to Sunday 06:00 across many areas.

  • The warning covers heavy rain, possibly persistent, in parts of Northern Ireland (especially east), southern Scotland, northern England, north and west Wales.

  • Rainfall amounts are expected to be widely 20–40 mm, with higher totals up to 80–100 mm in more exposed or vulnerable locations.

  • Alongside the rain, there may be strong gusty winds and possibly thunderstorms, particularly as the system intensifies.

Impacts to expect

  • Flooding risk: Localised flooding is possible, particularly in low-lying or poorly drained areas. Homes, businesses, and transport may be affected.

  • Transport disruption: Road travel may be hazardous—spray, standing water and reduced visibility. Train and bus delays or cancellations are likely where infrastructure is affected.

  • Power supply issues: Some power cuts may occur if heavy rain and winds lead to damage to overhead lines or flooding at substations.

  • Danger to life: In places where water becomes fast-flowing or very deep, or where flood defence is overwhelmed, there is a small chance of danger to life.

Timing & geography

  • Best estimate: the worst of the rain will set in late morning Saturday, spreading northeastwards. It will persist through into the early hours of Sunday in many places.

  • By dawn Sunday, heavy rain should have cleared from Wales, easing also in northern England and Scotland. Showers and strong winds may linger.

What you should do

  • Check whether your area is under warning, and monitor updates: yellow warnings can change as forecasts become more precise.

  • If travelling, allow extra time. Keep a close eye on road conditions; avoid driving through flooded roads.

  • If you live in flood-prone areas, consider flood protection measures: sandbags, moving valuables to higher ground, checking drains are clear.

  • For high wind periods, secure loose outdoor items (garden furniture, etc.).

  • Have emergency supplies ready in case of power loss: torch, batteries, phone charge, etc.
