The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms that will be in effect for a large portion of Scotland and Northern Ireland on Thursday, August 14. The warning is in place from midnight on Wednesday until 10 pm on Thursday.
According to the Met Office, while most areas will remain dry, heavy showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop, which could lead to some disruption. Where thunderstorms do occur, there's a possibility of:
Flooding: Heavy downpours could lead to some surface water flooding, potentially causing difficult driving conditions and road closures. There is a small chance that some communities could be cut off.
Travel disruptions: Flooding or lightning strikes could lead to delays and cancellations for train and bus services.
Power cuts: There is a slight chance of power cuts and a potential for loss of other services.
Damage: There is a small chance of damage to homes and businesses from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail, or strong winds.
The Met Office advises that heavy downpours could accumulate 20-40 mm of rain in less than an hour, with higher totals possible in areas affected by slow-moving storms. Hail and lightning are also expected.
