Yellow Weather Warning for Thunder

Updated: Aug 14, 2025

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms across large parts of Scotland today, Wednesday, August 13, 2025. The warning is in effect from 2 pm until midnight and covers most of the country, from the Borders to Orkney. A similar warning is also in place for tomorrow, Thursday, August 14, covering all of Scotland and Northern Ireland until 10 pm.

The Met Office warns that while most areas will remain dry, scattered heavy showers and thunderstorms could develop this afternoon and evening. Where these occur, some places could see 20-30 mm of rain in less than an hour, with localised totals possibly exceeding 50 mm if storms repeatedly affect the same areas. The most intense thunderstorms could also produce large hail and gusty winds.

Potential impacts of the thunderstorms include:

  • A small chance of fast-flowing or deep floodwater, which could pose a danger to life.

  • Flooding of homes and businesses.

  • Damage to buildings from floodwater, lightning, hail, or strong winds.

  • Difficult driving conditions and road closures.

  • Delays or cancellations to public transport services.

  • A slight chance of power cuts.
