The week ahead in the UK will be dominated by a notable split in the weather, with a clear distinction between conditions in the east and west. A cool northeasterly airflow will become the main feature, bringing a noticeably cooler feel to the air, particularly for eastern and central areas.
Monday and Tuesday:
The week will begin with this distinct east-west divide firmly in place. While parts of western Scotland, Wales, and Western England can expect bright conditions and a decent amount of sunshine, the east will be battling with more cloud cover. This cloud, which may be low-lying, will bring a fresher, cooler feel, with the potential for some light showers or drizzle, especially near North Sea coasts. Southern England and Ireland may see an area of low pressure developing, bringing spells of heavy, showery rain. Gusty winds will also be a feature, particularly across the far southwest of the UK. Temperatures will reflect this divide, with highs of up to 28°C in sunnier parts of southern England, but a much cooler 16°C on some northeast coasts.
Mid-Week (Wednesday and Thursday):
The northeasterly flow is expected to persist through the middle of the week. This means the contrast between the sunny west and cloudy, cooler east will continue. Western areas, including parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland, will likely enjoy the best of the sunshine. Meanwhile, low cloud and the risk of scattered showers will continue to drift onto eastern coasts and nearby inland areas. Temperatures will see a general cooling trend, with highs ranging from 17°C to 25°C, and feeling particularly cool on northeast coasts where temperatures could struggle to get above 14°C. The risk of heavy showers will continue for southern England and Ireland, with a mix of cloud and sunny spells elsewhere.
The Weekend:
Looking ahead to the weekend, there are signs of a subtle change in the weather pattern. The northeasterly winds are expected to ease, and for many, Saturday will be a substantially dry day with a mix of cloud and sun. However, the risk of some showers, particularly in western parts of Ireland and England and Wales, will increase. A developing area of low pressure in the North Atlantic, potentially linked to a tropical storm, adds a degree of uncertainty to the long-range forecast. By Sunday, a more unsettled or changeable pattern is likely to emerge, especially for northern and western parts of the UK. This could bring an increase in cloud and more frequent rain, with southwesterly winds beginning to pick up. Despite this, temperatures are likely to remain near to or slightly above average for the time of year. While confidence in the fine details is low for the latter half of the week, the general trend points towards a more Atlantic-influenced, and therefore more unsettled, period.
