The August bank holiday weekend is just around the corner, and it looks like a tale of two halves for many parts of the UK. While a high-pressure system is expected to bring a mostly fine and settled start, there's a good chance of more changeable weather moving in later, particularly from the west.
Saturday & Sunday: Mostly Dry and Bright
For most of the country, Saturday and Sunday are shaping up to be pleasant days, thanks to a dominant high-pressure system. Expect a good deal of dry weather with some sunny spells. Temperatures will be on the rise, widely reaching the low to mid-twenties Celsius. However, coastal areas, especially those on the North Sea coast, may feel a bit cooler due to a breeze off the sea.
England & Wales: The best of the sunshine is likely in northern and eastern areas on Saturday. Some patchy drizzle can't be ruled out in western parts of England and Wales, but overall, it should be a nice day for getting out and about. Sunday will see temperatures rise, with a chance of showers arriving in the South West later in the day.
Scotland: A largely bright and pleasant start to the weekend with good sunny spells, particularly in the northeast.
Northern Ireland: Expect a bright and sunny start, with fine conditions lasting throughout the weekend.
Bank Holiday Monday: A More Uncertain Outlook
The forecast for Monday becomes a bit more complicated due to a low-pressure system in the Atlantic. While some models suggest it will bring rain to parts of the UK, there is still a lot of uncertainty.
England & Wales: There is a possibility of heavy showers or spells of rain arriving, particularly for southern England and Wales. This is the part of the weekend that is most uncertain, so it's best to keep an eye on the local forecast.
Scotland & Northern Ireland: It is more likely to stay dry and brighter for these regions, with a few sunny spells still on the cards.
In summary, the weekend starts with a lot of dry, settled weather, but Monday is looking more unsettled, especially for the south. It's a classic case of high pressure battling low pressure, and the exact outcome is hard to predict with complete certainty. Temperatures will be warm but not quite reaching the heatwave conditions we've seen earlier this summer.
Enjoy the long weekend, and don't forget to pack a light raincoat, just in case!
